Transplant
When people ask me where I’m from, I mumble a rambling response about Texas, New York, and North Carolina. The idea that I could ever answer it simply has never crossed my mind. Undoubtedly, they must want to know EVERYTHING about me!
To hopefully unpack my suitcase for more than a month somewhere, I have landed in LA. My luggage arrived! I took public transit!! I was sat on by a man because he “did not see me”!!! The greater symbolism of which is not lost on me.
Had my first celeb sighting last night after Zeke’s ucb show. Walking his dog… “Chris” Nolan. My only chance to offer my notes and I blew it. Just let him walk right by me.
I stood in a room packed with industry folks drinking soda waters and coke from the bar, because they have not had work for a very long time. I talked to a seasoned assistant editor who said he did a stint as a bus driver while the strikes happened. Things still haven’t quite bounced back here I guess. I couldn’t have planned a better time to make my mark on LA.
Overheard two young women talking at a bar last night, before attending Magda’s comedy show, “I like that comedian, Joe… puh… pee-air… Perrrra?” I’ve found my people.
I have sat in the too hot sun and too cool breeze - feeling like a smaller version of myself from the past. My bones feel as tired as Chris Nolan looked, walking his dog down a crowded street, staring vacantly into the void, full of endless possibility, maybe.
With a few tour dates on the horizon, I asked the band to share their tour regrets with me as a writing exercise for our substack. They laughed and Sarah thought “good prompt!”. I’m still waiting for some answers. My worry is that they all live life to the fullest and have no regrets!! It’s just me!?
I regret not purchasing this extra large, very worn-in, stained sweatshirt with “Special Lady 🌹, Atlantic City, NJ” beautifully etched across. Fort Collins, I NEED THIS.
